Can you bring lip gloss on a plane? (Canada)

Yes, you can bring lip gloss on a plane in Canada. In carry-on baggage, each container must be 100 mL or less and fit with your other liquids, aerosols and gels in one clear, resealable bag of no more than 1 L per passenger. Lip gloss also goes in checked baggage, where the carry-on 100 mL limit does not apply.
Your gloss can make the trip. It just needs to leave the clutch for security. Pack it with the liquids before you get to the airport, not while your boarding pass is open on your phone and your bag is halfway through the scanner.
Does lip gloss count as a liquid in Canada?
For airport screening, yes: it belongs with liquids, aerosols and gels. The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) specifically lists lip gloss under gels. A thick formula, shimmer or a doe-foot applicator does not turn it into a solid.
Solid lipstick is different. CATSA's lip-product guidance says solid lipsticks in carry-on baggage are not subject to the size and volume restrictions. Think about the product inside, rather than whether the packaging is called a tube.
Lip oil belongs with your liquids too. If you are choosing what to pack, our lip oil versus lip gloss guide compares the formats and finishes. Switching from gloss to oil does not free up a liquids-bag slot.
What are CATSA's carry-on limits for lip gloss?
CATSA's packing rules, checked 23 October 2026, set out three things to remember:
- Each liquid or gel container must be 100 mL or less. The limit applies to the container, not just the product left inside.
- All your containers must fit in one clear, resealable plastic bag with a capacity of no more than 1 L.
- Each passenger gets one such bag. Your gloss shares it with your other liquids, gels and aerosols.
That means the small gloss in your handbag and the face cream in your cabin suitcase need to fit together. A second carry-on item does not give you a second liquids allowance.
| What you are packing | Carry-on through Canadian screening | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Lip gloss in a container of 100 mL or less | Yes, inside your one clear, resealable liquids bag. | Yes. |
| Lip gloss in a container larger than 100 mL | No, even if only a little gloss remains. | Yes; the carry-on 100 mL limit does not apply. |
| Solid lipstick | Yes; it is not subject to the liquid size and volume restrictions. | Yes. |
The table covers ordinary lip gloss and solid lipstick. Other toiletries, especially aerosols, can have separate checked-baggage restrictions; the absence of a 100 mL limit is not an unlimited allowance for every cosmetic.
Can I take lipstick or lip gloss on a plane in my purse?
Yes, but your purse is still carry-on baggage for screening. A solid lipstick can stay with your makeup. Lip gloss needs to join the liquids bag, even if it usually lives in the tiny zip pocket you can find without looking.
CATSA says to take the clear bag out of your carry-on and place it in a bin at the screening point. Keep it somewhere you can reach without unpacking your whole weekend. The bottom of a stuffed tote, under your spare heels, is not that place.
After screening, you can move the gloss back to the bag you will use on arrival. Remember to put it with the liquids again if another airport screens your hand luggage later in the journey.

Can lip gloss go in checked baggage?
Yes. CATSA permits lip gloss in checked baggage and says containers over 100 mL can go there if the contents are not otherwise prohibited. Ordinary non-aerosol gloss does not have to meet the carry-on container limit when checked.
Choose where to pack it based on when you want it. A gloss in your checked suitcase is not available for a mirror check at the gate. Keep the one you want during the journey in your carry-on liquids bag; put extras in checked luggage if you prefer.
How should I pack lip gloss for a flight?
Tight caps matter more than a perfectly arranged makeup pouch. Cabin pressure changes can push product towards the opening, so carry the tube upright where practical.
- Tighten the cap before packing and keep the outside of the tube clean.
- Place the gloss upright in the clear liquids bag where practical, with the cap at the top.
- Use a bag that closes properly around all your containers, without forcing the seal over an overstuffed makeup kit.
- Keep your evening clutch empty of loose liquid makeup until you have passed screening.
- Driving to the airport? Keep the bag out of a hot car; heat is one of the storage questions in does lip gloss expire?
Green & Jaded is a 10 mL clear pearlescent shimmer gloss, well below the 100 mL container limit. It still goes in the liquids bag: being small does not create an exemption.
For the arrival look, pack a liner alongside it. Our liner-and-gloss guide covers the order and placement. You can work out the outline before the gloss leaves its bag.
What about connecting flights or flying home?
Check the rules wherever you will go through security, including a connection or your return airport. CATSA's guidance covers Canadian screening; it does not replace another country's rules.
The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) permits carry-on liquid containers of 3.4 oz (100 mL) or less in a quart-sized bag. Its travel checklist describes the “3-1-1” rule: containers up to that size, one clear quart-sized bag and one bag per passenger. Both official pages were checked 23 October 2026.
Canada's 1 L bag and the TSA's quart-sized bag are the authorities' respective instructions, not a reason to assume every airport uses identical rules. Check again close to departure, especially if the itinerary includes another security checkpoint.
FAQ
Can I bring a 10 mL lip gloss in my carry-on?
Yes. A 10 mL gloss is below CATSA's 100 mL container limit. Put it in your one clear, resealable liquids bag of no more than 1 L.
Can I bring several lip glosses on a plane?
Yes. For Canadian carry-on screening, each container must be 100 mL or less and all must fit with your other liquids, aerosols and gels in your single 1 L bag.
Does a nearly empty large container meet the limit?
No. CATSA applies the carry-on limit to the container size. A container larger than 100 mL does not qualify because less than 100 mL remains inside.
Does solid lipstick need to go in the liquids bag?
No. CATSA says solid lipstick is not subject to the carry-on size and volume restrictions. Lip gloss and gel lip products do belong in the liquids bag.
